Rebecca Fruto's (b.2001) paintings explore reincarnation as one metaphor for remembrance that is influenced by Fotoescultura, a traditional Mexican art form that combines photography and sculpture to memorialize loved ones. She holds a BA in Art from California State University, Bakersfield, where she began to reinterpret her personal history and narrative. She collects images that, when rendered in oils or charcoal, become a closer manifestation of these memories, which start to feel inauthentic with the passage of time. Her experiences with migration as a means for survival kindled her use of decorative symbols, often iridescent materials such as holographic vinyl, and construction materials in her reinterpretations of Fotoescultura. She has recently shown work at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, Band of Vices, locally at the ACK Gallery, and has been published in Suboartsmagazine's 46th issue.
